“I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.” ~ Ruth 1:21

Oh boy, Naomi.  I am sitting right next to you, looking into the same coffee cup, wondering why there’s nothing it in.  As if I stare long enough and hard enough I could fill it again.

I can only imagine the complete heartbreak and desolation Naomi felt, returning home with only a daughter-in-law in tow, her husbands and sons all dead.

But God had not forgotten her.  Yes, she endured some really tough times after arriving in Bethlehem.  But she endured.  She acknowledged her sadness and the full extent of what she had lost, and went from there.

And after all that she went through, God blessed her mightily – Boaz married Ruth, and Ruth had a son.  Naomi’s heartache was healed through her daughter-in-law (whom the women of the city proclaimed better than seven sons) by God’s grace.

If you feel like your cup is empty, quit looking into it, wondering where everything went.  Instead, hold it up to God, and ask Him to refill it.  He will do so to the point it is overflowing.

Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed is the LORD who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name become famous in Israel.” ~ Ruth 4:14
