“A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” ~ Proverbs 11:25
My little boy and I spent the morning helping some friends paint out at their house (don’t worry, he played with his cars and didn’t actually paint).
After being sick with a cold that has knocked me flat for the past several days, I wasn’t sure I really wanted to stretch myself on my first day since last week without cold medicine. However, I felt pretty good about going and really wanted to help, so we went ahead and made the trip.
And it was a terrific experience. We helped a friend and everyone had a great time.
Much like this verse in Proverbs reminds us, by extending ourselves to help others, we in turn will be refreshed. I think I am too often tripped into thinking that I need to reserve my energy so that I have enough to take care of the things I want to do. But as counterintuitive as it may be, that isn’t how God has set things up to work. He wants us to reach out and help others, because that is what fulfills us.
