“Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God.”
~ Psalm 146:5

To borrow from Shakespeare, that is the question.

Sometimes I look to the future and make up scenarios in my head of how things are going to be and what my life is going to look like.  I can get really carried away with this.  And then when it doesn’t come true, I get sad that my hopes have been dashed and that life just hasn’t turned out like I wanted it to.

But is that really the kind of “hope” that I’m supposed to have?

As far as I can tell, not really.

So often these “hopes” are built up on what I would like my life to look like.  They are built on worldly ideals and comforts and don’t really have anything to do with my walk with God.  They are just mental pictures of what I see the perfect life looking like.  And while sometimes I think it would be great if that’s how it did look, I am thankful that God has something better in mind for me.

So, to answer my own question, I need to remember what kind of hope to have.  I will not put my hope in people or in earthly things.  I will instead put my hope in God, the Maker of Heaven, and know that all the hope I put in Him will be blessed.
