“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.’”
~ Psalm 46:10
It snowed this past week and it was one of those glorious kinds of snows. The kind that blankets everything in steadily falling white, making the whole world silent. If you happen to live in a place where it snows, you know what I mean. If you’ve never experienced this, I hope you do at some point in life.
This particular kind of snow gives everything a blue twinkling glow at night and the streetlights glow even brighter, but the light turns golden as it reflects off of the snow. It’s such a beautiful moment and one of the many reasons that I love winter.
But the stillness that results from this kind of snow has an almost ethereal quality about it. It means you don’t hear anything when you go outside, just silence. For a little while, there aren’t cars rushing by or dogs barking, all you hear is nothing. It is absolutely amazing.
These moments make me think that God so wants us to take time to be still and give Him glory that even His creation takes the time to do so. Nature itself pauses to bow down before Him.
This morning I had a similar experience when I got up with my son. He is usually such a busy little boy, all wiggles and giggles and moving nonstop. But this morning he curled up in my arms and slept peacefully while I rocked him. Outside everything was quiet and I reveled in the incredibly peaceful gift God was giving me. So, as I rocked my son, I savored the stillness. I thanked God for all He has given us and really allowed myself to take a moment to be still and know that He is God.
Be watchful of moments like this as you go about your day. They are a gift from God and an opportunity to let Him know how much you adore Him.
